Scholarships 2022

University of Exeter – London Film School PhD Studentships in Film by Practice

Exeter’s College of Humanities is offering 2 fully funded PhD studentships in Film by Practice, as a split site degree with the London Film School, for study commencing in September 2022. These PhD studentships are tenable for up to three years and cover full tuition fees and a maintenance allowance. Increasingly, independent film practitioners feel the need not only to develop their skills and thinking beyond the received concepts of mainstream or, indeed, art cinema but also to bring greater critical, aesthetic and theoretical rigour to their practice. A new methodology is required if film is to move beyond its present parameters, one that acknowledges the historical imperatives of its culture. It is precisely this kind of innovative approach that the Exeter/LFS PhD in Film Practice aims to encourage.
  • The studentship will be for a period of up to 3 years (36 months), dependent on satisfactory progress, and will cover full tuition fees and an annual maintenance grant of £15,609 (2021/22 rate).
