The Institute of International Education (IIE) awards PhD scholars in China-related study areas an opportunity to study for up to 2 years at university in China. The Fellowship hopes to foster international interest in China and the study of the Chinese language by supporting China-related study among the international academic community’s rising generation of young scholars. This program provides substantial funding for PhD dissertation research in China, and for the continuation of Chinese language study, from six months to up to two years. Award recipients are expected to further develop and improve their Chinese language skills for the duration of their grant. Study in various universities in China usually begins in the fall semester. Selected schools to study at are Peking University, Sichuan University, and Beijing Normal University.
Amount: $16,100
: Annual living stipend of 80,000 Chinese Yuan Renminbi (RMB; approx. 12,900 USD), and an annual research stipend of 20,000 RMB (approx. 3,200 USD).

Eligibility & Requirements
- U.S.-based applicants must apply through IIE to be considered.
- Students applying from outside of the U.S. should apply directly to Hanban, the sponsor of the CCSP Fellowships.
- Have completed a master’s degree, or will have completed a master’s degree by the start of the fellowship Pursuing research in the arts, education, humanities, and social sciences with a focus on China.
- Have a minimum (HSK) test score level 5.
- Not a citizen of the People’s Republic of China. Will not be recipient of other Chinese government scholarship funding.
